Black Girls Travel Too
Experience Companion

Welcome, Queen.

You said yes to South Africa—and to an experience that deserves to be remembered in more than photographs.

This companion is your private place to capture the moments, emotions, connections, and discoveries that make this journey yours. As you travel from Johannesburg to the wild beauty of Pilanesberg and onward to Cape Town, take a few minutes each day to write what moved you, surprised you, challenged you, and brought you joy.

There is no perfect way to use these pages. Write honestly. Add the photographs you never want to forget. Record the small moments between the big adventures.

Long after the bags are unpacked, these memories will bring you back to who you were, what you experienced, and how the journey changed you.

You deserve a seat at this table.

We’re honored to experience South Africa with you.

With love,

You Said Yes.

Dear Queen,

You said yes.

Perhaps you said yes because South Africa has been on your list for years. Perhaps you wanted the adventure. Maybe you wanted the sisterhood. Maybe you simply needed to get away from the familiar and see something different.

Whatever brought you here, don't rush through it.

There is something powerful about leaving home and entering a place where the landscape, the history, the people, the food, and even the sounds invite you to see the world — and yourself — a little differently.

So before you pack your bags, take a moment.

Ask yourself:

Why did I say yes to this journey?
What am I hoping to experience?
What am I hoping to learn?
What am I ready to leave behind?
What am I hoping to bring home?

Day One
Arrive + Explore

You touched down at O.R. Tambo, and just like that, the waiting is over.

Somewhere between customs and your first glimpse of the Johannesburg skyline, years of pinning boards and painted daydreams became real ground under your feet.

Tonight there is a welcome dinner waiting, new faces who will feel like family by day ten, and the particular thrill of a first night somewhere you've never been.

You are here. Let that settle in your chest before you read any further.

What did it feel like the moment you knew you had actually arrived?
I saw...
I felt...
I wonder...
A fellow Queen I met tonight...

Day Two
Soweto

Today you walked through Soweto — South Africa's most famous township, and the birthplace of the fight against apartheid.

You are not simply sightseeing.

You are walking through stories.

Some belong to famous names — Nelson Mandela and Desmond Tutu both once called Vilakazi Street home, the only street in the world where two Nobel Peace Prize laureates lived.

Many belong to ordinary people whose courage changed the course of a nation.

Look closer.

What did you see in Soweto that you might have missed if you were simply checking places off an itinerary?
I saw...
I felt...
I wonder...

Day Eight
Robben Island

"There is no passion to be found playing small — in settling for a life that is less than the one you are capable of living."

— Nelson Mandela

Today you crossed the water to Robben Island.

Nelson Mandela spent eighteen years imprisoned here, carrying limestone across the same quarry, day after day, for no purpose beyond keeping him occupied — and he turned that toil into an education instead.

Stand in that cell. Let yourself feel whatever rises.

This is the kind of history you carry differently once you've stood inside it.

Standing where Mandela once stood, what did you feel?
I saw...
I felt...
I wonder...
A story a fellow Queen shared with me today...

Day Three
Explore Jo'burg

Put on your most comfortable shoes today — this one is a walking tour of Johannesburg.

You began at Constitution Hill, a former prison and military fort that once held Nelson Mandela, Mahatma Gandhi, Albertina Sisulu, Winnie Madikizela-Mandela, and so many others who refused to stay quiet. Today it houses the country's Constitutional Court — the same ground that once caged freedom now protects it.

From there, Maboneng — the Sotho word for "place of light." Restaurants, art, coffee, color.

And finally Victoria Yards, where community and creativity share the same block.

Notice how a single city can hold a prison and a place of light within walking distance of each other.

What did it feel like to walk from a place built to cage people into a place built to celebrate them?
I saw...
I felt...
I wonder...

Day Four
Cultural Immersion

Today is yours.

Maybe you're floating over the Cradle of Humankind in a hot air balloon, looking down on the literal birthplace of humanity. Maybe you found a hideaway spot outside the city and let the afternoon slow all the way down.

Either way — this is a rest day, and rest is part of the journey too.

What did you choose to do with a day that was entirely yours?
I saw...
I felt...
I wonder...

Day Five
Safari Begins

You said goodbye to Johannesburg today and arrived somewhere older than memory — Pilanesberg, a national park sitting inside a volcanic crater that erupted 1,300 million years ago.

Afternoon tea, then your first game drive. Open vehicles, wide sky, thousands of animals who have never once needed anyone's permission to be exactly what they are.

Tonight, dinner under a sky far from any city light.

What did it feel like to see wildness up close for the first time on this trip?
I saw...
I felt...
I wonder...

Day Six
Cape Town

Before sunrise, you were back out in the reserve — the animals just beginning their day, the air still cool, maybe the Big Five somewhere in your camera roll now.

Then: breakfast, an airport, and a short flight into an entirely different South Africa. Cape Town, the Mother City, waiting on the other side.

What are you carrying with you from the bush into the city?
I saw...
I felt...
I wonder...
📍 View on Google Maps Table Mountain
Day Seven
Table Mountain

Table Mountain today — one of the New Seven Wonders of Nature, over 2,200 plant species living on a single mountaintop, and a cableway ride to a view that makes the whole trip feel small and enormous at once.

Later, a visit to the townships surrounding Cape Town — not to observe from a distance, but to sit down and share a meal with the people who call this place home.

What did breaking bread with someone whose life looks nothing like yours teach you today?
I saw...
I felt...
I wonder...

Day Nine
Final Day

Your last full day in the Mother City.

Maybe you're at the Waterfront doing one more round of shopping. Maybe you're by the pool doing nothing at all. Maybe you're somewhere quiet, already feeling this trip start to end.

Tonight, your final dinner together — bring your camera roll and your stories.

What do you most want to remember about tonight, before it becomes a memory?
I saw...
I felt...
I wonder...

Day Ten
Farewell

You came. You saw. You conquered.

You bet on yourself, and you won.

However this trip changed you, that change doesn't end at the airport.

As you head home, what is the very last thing you want to say to South Africa?
I saw...
I felt...

Coming Home

Before you left, we asked what you were hoping to bring home.

You wrote:
Did it come true? What actually came home with you?
One Last Thing
For the Next Queen

Someday, another woman may say yes to this same journey — nervous, curious, hoping for something she can't quite name yet, just like you were.

With your permission, a piece of your story may be shared with her — to remind her she's not the first, and she won't be the last.

Write a letter to the next Queen who takes this journey after you.
